Sweet Almond Oil

Almond trees have been cultivated since the Bronze Age and their nuts were one of the first seeds and seed oils to be used by man. Almonds are rich in vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, D and E, and contain calcium, magnesium and potassium.

Almond oil comes in two types, sweet almond oil and bitter almond oil. Today I shall jot about sweet almond oil. Like olive oil is edible. The best sweet almond oil is the natural expeller pressed oil from raw almond kernels. The oil is then filtered and bleached by exposure to light. It has a shelf life of around a year.

Sweet almond oil is yellow in colour, with little smell and a sweet, slightly nutty flavour. It is high in fatty acids, mainly oleic acid with lesser amounts of palmitic, linoleic, linolenic and stearic acids.

The oil  is very easily absorbed by the skin and is a popular carrier oil used by masseurs and aromatherapists. Its high content of fatty acids, softens and smoothes the skin without clogging it. Sweet almond oil helps the skin to balance its loss and absorption of moisture and promotes cell renewal. Therefore it is regularly used for dry, cracked, sensitive, wrinkled or sun damaged skin. It also strengthens, thickens and nourishes the hair.

Other health and beauty uses for the oil include using the oil as a moisturizer, to remove eye make-up, to soften cuticles and ear wax, to get rid of dark circles under eyes, and to naturally prevent and treat acne. It is great in salad dressings and a useful ingredient in home-made soap making.

It is well worth adding sweet almond oil to your usual beauty routine.

Vanessa's Baby Oil
From Make Your Own Cosmetics  Submitted by HBN President Donna Maria
This simple combination of ingredients, including calendula, a well known skin loving, healing herb, will help baby's skin remain smooth and supple. I began using this on my daughter just 8 days after she was born when I noticed dry skin around her wrists and ankles. Works like a charm ~ Donna

Yield: Approx. 1/2 ounce   Shelf Life: 6 months

1 tbsp. sweet almond oil
1/8 tsp. Vitamin E
2 tsps. infused calendula oil (I infused in extra virgin olive)

Mix all ingredients together in a dropper bottle and shake gently to combine. To use, apply to baby's skin after bath using only a tiny bit. For a 10 pound infant, 6 to 8 drops is sufficient for arms and legs as only a light layer is necessary for baby skin. Use more for toddlers and larger babies. If fresh oils are used to make this product, the shelf life will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 6 months. It will last longer if kept refrigerated during any extended periods of non-use. If the product begins to smell badly, the oils have become rancid and the product should be discarded.

Nasturtiums

The nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus), a favourite plant with both children and adults Worldwide, was originally from South America. It is also popular not only for it's pretty bright flowers, easy direct sowing and fast growing, but also as an edible flower. Other pluses are that they attract hummingbirds to the garden and have many natural beauty and medicinal properties.

Nasturtium leaves are rich in vitamin C and the seeds have a high iron and phosphorus content. They contain a sulphur compound which makes them an excellent anti-fungal, antiseptic, and antibiotic. In South America, especially Peru, they were used after battles to disinfect wounds. Nasturtiums were also used in the past to counteract scurvy and to treat any condition that stemmed from yeast or parasite problems. Many of us also learnt from childhood that chewing a nasturtium leaf at the first sign of a sore throat, helped to ease it.

The fresh juice of nasturtiums is known as an excellent treatment for alopecia (baldness caused by illness or stress), as it stimulates hair growth when rubbed in the scalp. A simple hair tonic is also made which is said to promote the growth of thick hair, it combines rum with nasturtium and nettle leaves. A tea made with nasturtium leaves and flowers make an excellent rinse for thin or oily hair. Soaking feet infected with athletes foot in a bowl strong infusion of nasturtium leaves and water has also shown good results.

WARNING:
Not suitable for pregnant women or those trying for a baby, as nasturtiums promote menstration.

Nasturtiums, being edible, are excellent to have on hand in every kitchen. The leaves and flowers have a peppery tang, and can be added to salads as a main ingredient or a pretty garnish. The seed pods can be pickled and used as a substitute for capers. During WW2 the seeds were actually ground and used as a substitute for black pepper. Used as companion plants in the vegetable garden, nasturtiums repel harmful insects and attract beneficial insects. So pick up a packet of nasturtium seeds and pop them in your garden, pots or window box and  with a bit of imagination you could even find more uses for them.

Spearmint

Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is the common garden mint that most of us know. It originated in the Mediterranean region. The Ancient Greeks believed it symbolized hospitality, the Romans revered it's medicinal and culinary uses and are said to have been the first to create mint sauce. Due to it's usefullness and hardiness mint quickly spread to many parts of the World. Mint became very popular with the folk of the Southern states of the US  and that wonderful drink the Mint Juleps fast became part of their cuisine.

Like all the mints it is a very good source of dietary Fiber, vitamin A, C, B2 (riboflavin), folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, copper and manganese, and a good source of vitamins B1 (thiamine), B3 (niacin), and B6, phosphorus, selenium and zinc.

Spearmint leaves are the part of the plant that is used. Spearmint tea is well known for it's medicinal properties. It relieves nausea and heartburn, cleanses the liver, promotes bile flow and also assists in easing morning and travel sickness. In the Mediterranean region they believe that regular drinking of the tea will aid women who have excessive body and facial hair.

Due to it's many healthy constituents it works well externally to relax muscle spasms, reduce inflammations, ease arthritis and rheumatic pains. Drinking the tea or spearmint oil added to a steamer gives relief with respiratory problems by opening up the nose, throat, and lungs. Mint as an infusion and as an oil is a good antiseptic and inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungus so is beneficial for many skin problems. Its anti-pruritic properties makes the oil useful for treating insect bites and stings.

In the kitchen spearmint is used for both sweet and savoury dishes. Sorbets, iced and hot drinks, salads, rice and vegetable dishes are all made tastier with it's use.

Spearmint in the garden is a wonderful companion plant for roses but it needs to be watched or it tends to take over a garden. That is why many prefer to plant it in containers. Mice hate mint so to keep them away from foodstuffs or seeds just scatter dried mint around the area. Why not pick up a pot of spearmint today?

Scots Pine Essential Oil

There are many varieties of pine but the one that is normally used therapeutically is the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). Also known as Scotch Pine and Norway Pine. The tree is native to the North and West of Europe. The best quality pine pure essential oil is extracted from the needles of the Scots pine tree by steam distillation.

An oil is extracted from the cones, twigs and wood clippings, but this has a harsh aroma, and another oil is also ontained from the pine resin and this we know as turpentine. Both these oils do have medicicinal properties but are not suitable for aromatheraphy, dermatology and massage as they irritate the skin and mucous membranes. They are often used in household products like cleaners and disinfectant.

Pine oil is colourless to a very pale yellow and watery in viscosity.. It has a strong pine aroma with a camphoraceous undertones. Pine oil's main property is as a powerful antiseptic and it is also analgesic, anti-bacterial,  diuretic, and energizing.

It's health benefits include the treatment of skin problems like eczema, pimples, boils and psoriasis, relief of joint pain like arthritis, relief of mental stress and fatigue, curing respiratory problems like coughs and colds, a remedy for urinary tract infections, reducing the inflammation of the gall bladder, and speeding up the metabolism. Apart from massage it can be used in a burner or added to the bath water, to relieve asthma, sinusitis, coughs and colds.

Warning: When purchasing pine oil for personal use make sure you have the right variety and it is the pine pure essential oil (Pinus sylvestris). Do not take internally and do not use when pregnant. It is also not suitable for young children and old folk. It should also be used sparingly.

A good tip is to add a few drops to carpet shampoo and pet shampoo as it is said to repel fleas.

Pine oil has many beauty and cosmetic uses and is found in soaps, bath oils, massage oils, perfumes, steam baths and saunas. It blends well with cedarwood, rosemary, lavender and sage.

Patchouli Essential oil

Patchouli, that wonderful essential oil loved by the Hippies of the 60's, still remains a favourite with many folk. Patchouli oil is extracted from the leaves of the P.patchouli/P.cablin plant which is part of the mint family. The plant is native to Malaysia and India and was only introduced into Europe in Victorian times when it was imported with silk and cashmere shawls and Indian ink to protect them from moths. in 1845. Today the plants are cultivated in many tropical counties where they extract the oil by steam distillation.

It is one of the few oils that, like fine wine, it improves with age. Newly distilled patchouli oil has a fresh, green, slightly harsh aroma whereas when it ages it mellows giving a rich, exotic, spicy aroma with earthy undertones. Patchouli is a thick oil ranging in colour from light yellow to brown with a green tint and it has a base blending note. Its aroma is suitable for both men and women. The oil has a three year shelf life if stored in a cool place out of the sunlight.

Patchouli oil's properties are antibacterial, antibiotic, antidepressant, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, calmative, astringent, decongestant, diuretic, fungicidal, nervine, sedative, stomachic, and insecticidal. It is used externally for most skin conditions like dermatitis, eczema, acne, dandruff, relief of insect bites and shas superb tissue regenerating properties. It will protects wounds and ulcers from infections and from getting septic. As a massage oil it helps with weight reduction by reducing cellulite and aiding against water retention. It is also an excellent sedative. Patchouli is also used as an insect repellant either by placing pads a few drops of the oil in drawers and boxes or burning in an oil burner. For haircare it is used as a conditioner on dark hair and dreadlocks.

Note: Patchouli oil is non-toxic, non-irritant, and non-sensitizing but is as with most essential oils in not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy.

After a stressful day pop a few drops of patchouli in a burner or a few drops in a nice warm bath. It will relax an over active mind and restore an emotional balance leaving you grounded. As it has a very penetrating aroma when blending with other oils just a drop will do. Try it with rose, jasmin, neroli, geranium or ylang ylang.

Strawberries

Strawberries are not just a tasty and nutritious fruit, they are also excellent for the health and are especially good for our skin. The Romans and the herbalists of the Middle Ages also noted their health properties, as well as their culinary delights.

Nutrition wise strawberries contain excellent amounts of vitamin C and manganese. They contain very good amounts of dietary fibre and iodine and good amounts of potassium, folate, vitamins A, B2, B5, B6 and K,  omega_3 fatty acids, magnesium and copper.

Health wise strawberries are also a rich source of phenols with their potent antioxidant properties. Together with their high vitamin C they aid in the prevention of heart disease, high blood pressure and enhance memory function amongst many other qualities. Strawberries have anti-inflammatory properties and can be very beneficial for those with arthritis or other problems of the joints. The tea made from strawberry leaves and roots is wonderful for digestive upsets, and gout.

Beauty wise the salicylic acid, antioxidants and exfoliants contained in strawberries exfoliate the skin by removing dead skin cells and also tone the skin by tightening the pores. They also lighten and brighten the skin. Strawberries are excellent source of the antioxidant ellagic acid, that helps protect skin against sun damage. As they are around 50 calories per cup and high in fibre they are an excellent slimming fruit. The fresh fruit removes discolouration of the teeth if rubbed on them and the juice allowed to remain on for about five minutes. Then brush teeth to prevent the acidity damaging the teeth.

Warning: Strawberries are one of the fruits which can cause allergic reactions in some people. They contain measurable amounts of oxalates so should be eaten with care by those with kidney, gallbladder and thyroid problems.  They also can cause hives in some children and adults.

Strawberries are very perishable and once picked do not ripen further. Purchase ripe, firm berries and eat within a few days. It is also important to purchase the organic variety as normal strawberries contain pesticide residues even after washing. Store in the refrigerator for 1 to 3 days and only wash just before use. To freeze strawberries, wash and dry them, remove the stems, and arrange them in a single layer in container and freeze, once frozen they can be stacked in the container without worries of squashing them.

So pick up a tub today and enjoy.

Dandelions

It is sad that so many modern gardeners view the dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) as a lowly weed rather than a wild flower or herb. The plant has been known as restorative and rejuvenating by herbalists, both in the East and West, for over a thousand years. Dandelions are part of the Aster family.

The dandelion is made up of a juicy root, stem, flowers and leaves, all edible. The leaves are very high in carotenes, phosphorus, vitamin A and C, iron, magnesium, potassium, the antioxidant glutathione, and calcium. The root contains choline and the flowers contain lecithin amongst many vitamins and minerals.

Dandelion leaves are a diuretic and a natural detoxifying herb, helping in flushing out excess water and waste products from the body. The sterols in the leaves have an anti-inflammatory effect.  The leaf tea is a mild laxative, said to lower cholesterol and when cold is soothing on sunburn.

The choline in the dandelion root makes it a mild stimulant for the gallbladder and liver, aiding in clearing them of waste products and increasing bile flow. Herbalists used it as a cure for hepatitis and jaundice in days gone by. The root is also taken to aid in dissolving kidney and gall stones and is excellent for all problem skin conditions. Dried dandelion roots make an excellent coffee substitute.

An oil made from dandelion flowers is available as well and can be applied externally to relieve arthritis and other aches and pains.

Warning: The fresh latex (milk) in the stalk can cause dermatitis.  On the up side the latex is said to dry out warts.

If picking fresh dandelions or buying from a farm stall make sure that they are free from pesticides. Young, fresh leaves are great in salads or added to soups and stews. Dandelion root, flowers and leaves can also be found dried as teas, a pill or capsule, or the juice preserved as an essence. The dried herb will keep for up to a year in an airtight tin kept in a cool dark area.

Dandelion Coffee

Collect a good supply of roots, clean them well and dry them for about two days over a radiator. Cut the dried roots into 1cm / 1/2" long lengths and roast them evenly; as with coffee you get a stronger flavour by roasting them a darker colour. Grind in an ordinary grinder and make up in a jug the way you would instant coffee. Strain as you pour into cups. The flavour is nutty and rather bitter.

Oolong Tea

Oolong tea is made from the same plant, Camellia Sinensis, as white, green and black (Ceylon) tea. The difference between them is how they are processed and often the area and temperature they are grown in. Green tea is not fermented, oolong tea is partially fermented by the raw leaves being sun-wilted, bruised and left a certain period to oxidise, black tea is fully fermented and white tea is steamed.

Each process of tea has it's own special flavour and often drunk for their different health benefits. Oolong tea (also known as wulong or black dragon tea) was originally processed in China over 400 years ago. It is said to be a difficult process, hence the fact it was and is not exported in as large quantities to the West as green and black tea. The tea gives a light golden-red liquor with a rich flavour. The tea contains many different kinds of health giving polyphenols.

In the West oolong tea is fast becoming known as a slimming tea. Studies have shown that drinking as little as two cups daily of oolong tea has the effect of boosting the metabolism and activating the enzyme that is responsible for dissolving excess triglycerides. Triglycerides are normally used as fuel for the body but if in excess they are stored as fat.

Oolong tea also helps in increasing the effect of the copper-zinc-SOD enzyme in the body. SOD revitalizes cells and reduces the rate of cell destruction by neutralizing some free radicals. The result being less wrinkles, less age spots and healthy hair. It also is an aid for those with skin problems like psoriasis and eczema.

Chinese herbalists use oolong tea to boost weak spleen and kidney energy. The anti-oxidants contained are also noted for strengthening the immune system and therefore promoting longevity.

Making Tea:
1) Always boil fresh water each time you boil the kettle, never water which has been previously boiled. Filtered water, not tap water, is best in most areas.
2) Pre-heat tea pot. Add tea. As soon as water comes to the boil add to pot. Prolonged boiling gives tea a flat taste.
3) Leave to brew of around 4 minutes.
NOTE: Always store teas in an airtight container out of the light. Tea absorbs both moisture and flavours of strong smelling foodstuffs, so best to store separately in a dry area.

There are many varieties of oolong tea as it is grown in a few countries in Asia. Try a few and see which one you prefer best. I find I am now drinking as much oolong as I do green and black tea.

Walnut Oil

Oil has been extracted from walnuts and added to food for thousands of years. Walnut oil, with it's wonderful nutty flavour has also been found to have exceptional health and nutritional benefits.

Nutritionally cold expeller pressed walnut oil, not the refined oil,  is high in linoleic acid, Omega_3 fatty acids,  vitamins B1, B2, B3, E, tryptophan, manganese, copper and many phytonutrients.

Health wise, consuming walnuts or walnut oil regularly lowers bad cholesterol (LDL) and therefore assists in maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system. The high concentration of Omega_3 fatty acids helps maintain a healthy brain. It also supplies the body with many of the essential fatty acids and antioxidants that it requires. and is said to slow the aging process. Another benefit is that walnuts and walnut oil have anti-inflammatory properties and which assist in easing arthritis pain. Another benefit is the increase of blood levels of melatonin so assist with insomnia.

Externally walnut oil also has many health and beauty benefits for the skin. The oil has great emollient qualities and often used as a blend by masseurs. It is used to regenerate and moisturise mature, dry, and damaged skin. It is used in combating skin problems like eczema. and fungal infestions. It is also used as a sunbathing oil as it protect the skin from UV damage and enhances tanning.

Artists might be interested to know that walnut oil was a favourite of Renaissance painters due to it's ability to dry quickly. Modern painters tend to prefer linseed oil.

WARNING: If allergic to tree nuts do not use the oil either internally or externally.

Walnut oil is fairly expensive and loses nutrition if over heated so rather add to dishes after cooking. It's has a rich, nutty flavor that is perfect to add to salad dressings, pesto, pasta, and puddings. An unopened bottle of walnut oil can be kept for well over a year but once opened it will only keep refrigerated for a few months and a couple of months unrefrigerated before losing it's nutritional and health properties.

All in all walnut oil is worth the extra expense against common canola and sunflower oils.

1 1/2 cups hazelnuts
1 tsp vanilla
3/4 cup powdered sugar
1/4 cup cocoa
3-4 tbsp vegetable, walnut, coconut or safflower oil
2 tbsp soy milk

Using a food processor, grind the hazelnuts until fine and powdery. Process for another minute or two. If your food processor is strong enough, the hazelnuts will eventually turn creamy and smooth. If you're using a less powerful food processor, this won't happen. Add remaining ingredients and process until smooth and creamy, adding a little bit more or less liquid to get desired consistency.

Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne Pepper is not just a spice to add zip to your food, it is nutritious fruit and has many excellent health benefits. Also known as Guinea pepper and Bird Pepper. It is not known exactly where the the plant originated and is said to have originally been brought to Europe by Columbus from the Americas and it is also said to have been brought to Britain from India around the same time.

Nutritionally cayenne is an excellent source of vitamin A (beta-carotene), contains good amounts of vitamins B6, C, E and K, potassium, lutein, fibre and manganese.  It's hot and spicy taste comes from it's main active ingredient Capsaicin.

Capsaicin has pain relieving properties. Therefore cayenne in a cream/salve, applied topically to the skin, gives relief to those suffering from conditions like arthritis, stiff neck, shingles, herpes zoster, neuralgia and psoriasis. Added to water it is an excellent gargle to cure sore throats, and as a tea it helps clear mucus when suffering from conditions like colds and 'flu and also relives candida. It's high beta-carotene content helps boost the immune system due to it's excellent anti-oxidant properties.

Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine recommends cayenne for proper digestion as it stimulates the flow of stomach secretions and saliva. A great Winter tip to warm up cold feet, is to sprinkle a bit of cayenne pepper into your socks. It will warm your toes by increasing circulation and improving blood flow.

In Victorian times cayenne was used for alopecia (hair loss). The scalp was massaged with a mixture of cayenne pepper and onion juice. This probably worked by increasing the blood circulation to the scalp which in turn nourished the hair follicles and triggered growth.

Studies are ongoing on the fact that cayenne could possibly prevent heart attacks. It helps to dissolve fibrin which causes platelets to stick together and the forming of blood clots and it also reduces triglyceride levels. For more info on cayenne's amazing healing properties see the writings of the late Dr. Christopher, Master Herbalist and Naturopath.

NOTE: Like with all other spices and herbs, if you are taking any medication or pregnant, check with your Pharmacist/Medical Practitioner before taking cayenne pepper. Excessive consumption of cayenne, like other hot spices, could cause uncomfortable burning sensations to mouth, stomach and lower colon.

Organic cayenne pepper can be purchased as a dried whole fruit, crushed as red pepper flakes or as a powder. Store in a sealed glass jar in a cool area away from sunlight. In the kitchen it is a useful ingredient for your Thai, Cajun and Mexican dishes. It can also be used to spice up any other meal especially beans, added to cocoa to add that little extra zip, and mixed with lemon juice and sprinkled on greens. It will aid digestion and prevent gas. Enjoy!

Styrax Benzoin

When I was a child Friar's Balsam was always part of our first aid box. The main ingredient in Friar's Balsam is benzoin. Benzoin is also known as styrax benzoin, styrax gum, and benjamin gum. It is actually a resin which is obtained by cutting an incision in the trees of the Styraceae family. The liquid resin from the tree hardens when exposed to the air. It is these lumps of gum benzoin that are then collected. These trees are grown in the rain forests of South-East Asia.

The gum resin has a sweet, warm, aroma similar to vanilla. It comes in various colours from pale yellow/tan to reddish/brown. The is available as a powder, dissolved in alcohol as a tincture, and as a resin oil. It's constituents include benzaldehyde, benzoic acid, cinnamic acid, sumaresinolic acid, styrene and vanillic acid.

Benzoin has been used for thousands of years in Asia as a perfume fixative and in incense. It was also burnt to fumigate places against evil spirits. In China, herbalists used it as a urinary antiseptic and as a digestive aid. In Europe, as mentioned before, it has been the main ingredient in Friar's Balsam since Elizabethan times. It has, over the years, become known as an good anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiseptic, astringent, carminative, deodorant, diuretic, and expectorant. It was a great favourite of Edgar Cayce who recommended benzoin for a wide variety of applications, most often as an ingredient in massage oil formulas and inhalant formulas.

Nowadays it's most common use is still, half to one teaspoon of benzoin tincture or Friar's balsam, in a bowl of boiling water or vapourizer, and which is inhaled to relieve both sinusitis and bronchitis. It is also found useful for wounds and skin ulcers ulcers as it protects and disinfects the skin. Athletes and runners find it very excellent for those annoying blisters they often get during events. It is also used to compliment mayapple in the treatment of warts and in creams for chapped and inflamed skin.

Benzoin is also used in burners to focus the mind when meditatating. It can be mixed into a carrier oil and massaged into the neck and shoulder area for nervous tension and the joints for relief of arthritis and gout. Being an excellent fixative benzoin can be used in homemade perfume and soaps as well as adding a sweet note to the aroma. It is also an insect repellant.

Important Notes: Benzoin oil or tincture is not to be used when pregnant. The oil and tincture is NOT to be taken internally. Not to be inhaled by asthmatics. Undiluted it can cause mild skin irritation, so always dilute. Excessive use can cause drowsiness. Benzoin oil and tincture are flammable.

For those interested, Friar's Balsam consists of benzoin resin, various balsams, aloe ferox leaf latex, myrrh, and angelica root.

Stinging Nettles

It is a shame that many look on the stinging nettle plant as just a weed to avoid in case they are stung and nothing else. Nettles have medicinal, nutritional, beauty and culinary uses. Ancient cultures recognised this and slowly modern man is doing the same.

Nettles (Urtica dioica, Urtica urens) are high in the minerals calcium, magnesium, chromium, potassium, iodine, zinc and silica. They contain Vitamins A, B, C, and K, are high in beta carotene and are one of the most powerful iron sources in the vegetable kingdom..

Nettles are known as a tonic, blood cleanser, astringent, diuretic, expectorant, anti-asthmatic, and anti-inflammatory. They are available as fresh leaves, dried leaves, freeze-dried leaves, tea, capsules, extract and tincture.

Medically nettle tea is used, with excellent results, to reduce blood pressure and to relieve premenstrual bloating.. The tea is also drunk as an arthritis treatment, as it is said to break down uric acid crystals in joints, and has an anti-inflammatory component . Nettles are an official remedy for rheumatism in Germany. Drinking the juice of the roots or leaves, or burning the dried leaves is said to relieve bronchial or asthmatic problems.

Nettles are good for the hair. Eating nettles or drinking the tea makes your hair brighter, thicker and shinier. The silicon contained in nettles is one of the reasons that makes nettle hair rinses so nourishing for the hair. Nettles have also been reported to be excellent in increasing bone density (see link to David Wolfe's article below). Due to nettles astringent qualities it is also used for facial steams and as a deep cleanser for oily skin.

In the kitchen fresh nettles can be cooked and served the same as spinach. They are high in protein. Nettle infused vinegar is also used due to it being very nourishing with all the minerals that the vinegar has leached from the nettles. Nettles has many other uses. They can be made into paper, cloth and rope and their juice used as a yellow/green dye. They are also used as a vegetarian rennet in cheese making. On top of everything else, gardeners love nettles as a natural, effective, aphid killer and for riding roses of black spot.

NOTES:
1) Those collecting fresh stinging nettles must e careful and wear protection or they could get stung.
2) Eat nettles in moderation, as they can cause constipation or stomach ache if eaten in excess.
3) Not to be taken during pregnancy.

Lemon Balm

Lemon balm, also known as melissa and cure-all, originated in the Eastern Mediterranean region and is a member of the mint family. It was a favourite healing plant of the Arabs and Ancient Greeks. The lemon name came from it's lemony perfume and taste, and the melissa name came from the Greek word for bees as the plant attracts bees.

In Mediaeval Europe it was not only used in herbal medicine but was also grown in the monastery gardens and used in the making of drinks like Carmelite Water and the liqueurs Benedictine and Chartreuse. In Tudor times it was used to clarify beer before hops were used for that purpose.

The constituents of lemon balm are volatile oils (citral, eugenol, citronellal, linalool, geraniol), a natural polyphenol rosmarinic acid, antiviral tannins and flavonoids. These give it antibacterial, antispasmodic, calming and antiviral healing effects. Known as a cure-all in the past this has been backed up by modern studies to show that it is useful in many kinds of natural healing. It's great calminative properties of the tea, for all age groups, helps to relieve anxiety, tension headaches, insomnia, nervous stomachs and flatulent dyspepsia, exam stress and tantrums, and is often combined with other calming herbs like hops, valerian and chamomile to enhance this effect. Lemon balm extract has been shown to be excellent against herpes simplex and dries up cold sores. The tea also relieves colds and helps to lower blood pressure and be useful when treating an over-active thyroid. The eugenol in lemon balm is a natural pain reliever so a compress made from lemon balm is said to relieve painful joints. All in all a very useful herb.

NOTE: People with thyroid disorders, who are pregnant or if suffering from night sweats should consult their health care provider before taking this herbal supplement. Never use the tea non stop for more than 10 days without taking a few days break.

It is well worth growing this perennial in or outdoors so you always have fresh or dried leaves on hand. For simple growing instructions go to the Herb Gardening website or any other favourite gardening site. When gardening, rub lemon balm leaves on your skin and it will repel any mosquitoes which may be around plus it can be used to treat anyinsect bites you may get. Bee keepers love lemon balm as they rub this lemon balm on the hives and it attract new bees and keep the old ones there.

Lemon balm leaves are distilled to obtain it's essential oil. This oil normally goes under the name of Melissa Oil. It can be used in massage oils, compresses and creams.

Lemon balm is a wonderful addition to many dishes. It not only can be used as a garnish but can be added to fruit and vegetable salads, fruit drinks, herb butters and sorbets. It combines well with berries, apples, peaches, melons, corn, broccoli, beans and asparagus. Substitute for lemon rind in jam and marmalades. And remember the tea is not only for medicinal reasons but makes a wonderful drink whether served hot or cold. Enjoy!

Lavender Oil

Pure lavender essential oil is an amazing oil as it is a natural antibiotic, antiseptic, anti-depressant and sedative. It's main benefits being that it balances & normalizes body functions, promotes tissue regeneration, speeds up wound healing, cleanses cuts, bruises & skin irritations, soothes & relaxes the mind & body, and eases aches and pains.

Unlike many pure essential oils which require to be diluted in a carrier oil, lavender oil is safe to use directly on the skin. It can be applied directly to spots, bites, cuts, minor burns and acne spots. A few drops sprinkled on a tissue and inhaled or rubbed on the temples or back of the neck will relieve headaches. For bruises, put a few drops on a damp cloth and place over the affected area, repeat twice a day. For earache add one drop of oil to one teaspoon of warm olive oil and place a couple of drops in the ear with a dropper. Mix aloe vera gel with a few drops of lavender oil for a soothing and cooling after sun gel. An excellent oil for your first aid kit.

Lavender oil's calming affect on the system and relief of fatigue , make it widely used in massage and aromatherapy. Not sleeping well? Put 6 drops in your evening bath after a stressful or tiring day, and soak your troubles away. Alternatively place 1 or 2 drops of lavender oil on your pillow before retiring to help give you restful sleep.

Even your pets can benefit from lavender oil. It soothes them in time of distress and also repels fleas and many other insects. For fleas you can add a few drops of oil to the rinsing water when washing pets bedding and/or you can dip their brush in water with a few drops of lavender oil added then brush through their fur. For stress place a pad with few drops of lavender oil in their bed.

Note: If pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition, consult with a healthcare practitioner prior to use. Keep away from eyes.

Always check that you are receiving a pure essential oil when purchasing lavender oil as many lavender oils sold are only for use in pot pourri.

Spray around the dog and even on its coat since Lavender is a good essential oil to repel mosquitos and fleas. This is great for use in a car with a nervous dog or at any time your dog is over-energized. (Note: He does a lot of work with pets and wears lavender oil to help them feel more relaxed and also helps to keep the bugs away. Great advice for those working with strays ~ Jackie)
