Rose Oil

Rose oil or rose otto as it is also called, is one of the most expensive essential oils. It has a long lasting fragrance and has a high odor intensity so very little is required.

It is obtained by steam distillation. It takes approximately 125lbs (57kg) rose petals to produce 1oz (28g) rose otto oil. The total yield of oil will depend upon the weather, time of the harvest, condition of the flowers and the method of distillation. A less expensive rose absolute is extracted with solvents. The best rose otto oil is said to come from Bulgaria and Turkey.

Rose oil relaxes and strengthens, imparting a feeling of calm and well being. It relieves stress related conditions, lifts the spirits and is used in treating grief, hysteria or depression. It eases the discomfits of PMS and menopause.

Rose oil is used in many commercial skin care products as it is anti-inflammatory, nontoxic, nonirritating, soothing and suitable for sensitive and aging skin.

In the home, rose oil can be put in the bath, added to massage oil and homemade skin care recipes, sprinkled on pot pourri and pomanders and put in a burner. Said to have aphrodisiac qualities it's perfume can also boost the libido.

NOTE: Although a very safe oil it should not be used during early pregnancy.

Pure rose essential oil can become solid in cold weather. If this happens roll the bottle around in your hand for a few minutes, or put it in some warm water, and it will liquefy.

Set your Valentine's Day or any other romantic occassion on fire with this 100% pure aromatic concoction.

1 tbsp grapeseed oil
2 drops sandalwood essential oil
2 drops clary sage essential oil
1 drop ylang ylang essential oil
1 drop 1 drops rose essential oil
1 tsp Vitamin E (optional, to extend shelf life)

Combine essential oils together in a small bottle and allow to mellow together for 2-3 days. Shake the blend a bit a few times daily. Add the essential oils to the grapeseed oil and Vitamin E. Shake gently to mix. You can double this recipe. Even though it may not seem like it calls for a lot of essential oil, the oils used a quite powerful and only a little is needed. You can substitute other oils but grapeseed tends not to stain sheets. To use, apply Love Oil to damp skin after bathing to infuse a lovely, natural, subtle aroma into the skin. Of course having someone massage the oil for you is even better! Enjoy!
